Appraisal
An alternative dispute resolution, which can resolve a disagreement when the insurance company and policyholder do not agree on the loss amount.
The insurance appraisal process is a policy provision found in the Loss Settlement section of the insurance policy.
Upon invoking appraisal the insurance company’s appraiser and policyholder’s appraiser will estimate the damages and try to come to an agreement on the amount of the loss. If the appraisers fail to agree, they will submit their differences to a mutually agreed upon disinterested umpire.
Umpire
When the insurance company and policyholder’s appraiser cannot come to an agreement, an insurance appraisal umpire is called in to resolve the dispute.
The appraisers and umpire selected meet to discuss differences. Once agreed upon, the appraisal umpire will complete an itemized estimate. If the umpire’s estimate is agreed to by either the insurance company or the policyholder’s appraiser it will set the amount of loss.
